Anxious parents and young children

Portrait of cute sad little girlCaryn Hess published an article on Psychology Everywhere, discussing how your anxiety can affect your children.

Little children look to their parents to understand the world. If you are anxious, your child will think they should be anxious as well. This can occur even when there isn’t anything bad or dangerous going on.

We all know an upset child can only be soothed by a parent. A well-meaning stranger or even family friends cannot soothe an upset child. In certain situations, as an anxious parent cannot soothe their child, the parent may actually upset the child even more with displays of fear, hostility or irritation. In these cases, it is very difficult for the child to calm down and feel safe and grounded again.

If you’re anxious, learning coping skills to reduce your anxiety is very helpful. When you’re calm, your child will know that they can be calm and know that everything is OK.
