Moving on after divorce

Woman listening to her therapist while sitting on couchIt’s not surprising many individuals struggle to move on and build a satisfying life after divorce. When a relationship ends, some of us experience profound feelings of loss, stress, and disappointment. It is essential to process these feelings in a healthy way, so the next chapter is a happy and fulfilling one.

Understanding post-divorce stress

Even if both partners agree divorce is the best option, the transition process that accompanies this major life change is stressful. In an effort to measure life events that increase stress to levels that impact physical health, two psychiatrists Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe conducted a large-scale investigation. After examining the medical records of over 5,000 patients, the researchers ranked 43 life events (occurring over the past 2 years) and found divorce ranked as nearly the highest on the scale, second only to the death of a spouse.

Because we understand stress can impact our health, it is extremely beneficial to be proactive in taking care of yourself and finding healthy ways to cope with stress. In addition to finding ways to fulfill ourselves and heal emotionally, we also need to be aware of taking care of our physical selves as well. Exercise and healthy eating are preventative measures that help reduce depression and anxiety.

Consider therapy as a healthy option

For many people, therapy after divorce is well worth the time and investment. A divorce brings changes to every aspect of your life and for some, a significant source of emotional support is also lost.

One of the reasons therapy is helpful is the establishment of a connection with a caring person, outside your circle of friends and family who can give unconditional support, understanding, and guidance as you begin the next chapter of your life. Therapy can also help you gain insight into the root of any psychological or emotional challenges you may be dealing with. Learning how to cope with stress and build self-confidence is helpful during a time of transition. Reaching out for help can give you the best chance of moving forward with new strength and confidence.
